In Recessions people still get their hair cut but may wait longer between cuts. If, on average, they usually get their hair done once a month and then wait an extra week between cuts that is the same as a loss of about 20% of your customer base. Instead of 5 haircuts every 20 weeks they will buy only 4. No one will move from once a month to once every 3 weeks to balance that out.

If they move from a cut every 6 weeks to every 8 weeks that's moving from 8 cuts a year to 6 cuts.
